Piano

Daniel Contreras is a visually impaired pianist and teacher in the north Houston area. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in August 2016 and will complete his Master’s studies in December 2019, at Sam Houston State University. Though his concentration is in Classical Piano, he also played with the University’s Jazz Ensemble for several years. He has been teaching private piano since June 2016, and has taught students of a wide range in age. With his experience in teaching both Classical and Jazz Piano, Daniel enjoys helping students in their growth, exploration, and confidence at the instrument.

Born and raised in Houston, Mr. Contreras comes from a musical family. Both his father and eldest brother are musicians as well. His musical upbringing consisted of playing the keyboard along side his dad and learning music theory from his brother who plays guitar. Though his formal training did not begin until 2010, Mr. Contreras has successfully combined the aspects of a self-teaching environment with those of the formal academic setting to form a unique approach to the instrument. During his time at Sam Houston State University, he studied under Dr. Ilonka Rus who taught him how to approach classical pieces with proper technique, musicality, and artistry. During his time in the University’s Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Aric Schneller, Mr. Contreras grew in his approach to improvisation, theory, and ear development.

Mr. Contreras loves helping students of all ages to further their musical journey. Whether it be learning how to play a favorite song, or becoming a better pianist, he is here to help each student go the distance.
