Spencer started playing the piano at the age of six; at age ten he added trumpet to his musical endeavors. Spencer both played and accompanied for the symphonic bands in both junior and senior high school. At age thirteen he won the solo concerto competition at the Broad Creek Music Festival in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Spencer attended Shenandoah Conservatory of Music in Winchester, Virginia. He accompanied for numerous musical theater and opera performances, including Godspell & Gianni Schicch. He graduated from Shenandoah in 1977 after earning a Bachelor of Music Education degree.

Spencer continued his music education by attending West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. He studied piano with Herman Godes & Dean Shank. During his tenure, he was accompanist for the Graduate String Quartet of WVU, and worked on the opera production of Ralph Vaughn Williams Riders to the Sea. A high point of his tenure at WVU was a trip to Bayreuth, Germany as Opera Workshop Accompanist at the International Youth Festival. After spending the day making music, the youth participants had the privilege of viewing Richard Wagner’s complete cycle of Der Ring des Nibelungen conducted by Pierre Boulez.

Spencer completed his Master of Music degree in piano performance in 1979. He has since performed in many different venues, including as guest artist aboard the Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, an appearance with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra in 1998, and as co-conductor with Pat Boone in his Blessed Christmas Tour of 2005.

Spencer currently lives in the Houston, Texas area with his wife Yulia, and their two daughters Antonina & Sasha.
