Cello

Cellist David Dietz has performed across the US and Europe and is equally comfortable in Solo, Chamber and Orchestral settings. Currently residing in Houston, Texas, David is pursuing a Master's degree at Rice University's Shepherd School of Music under the tutelage of Desmond Hoebig.

A native of New Cumberland, Pennsylvania, David was born into a musical family and began studying the cello at the age of four. Shortly thereafter he started performing with his family string quartet, the Dietz quartet, throughout the central Pennsylvania area. David was active in the local music scene throughout his childhood and became a member of the York Symphony Orchestra in 2012 at the age of 14. He won the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition in 2014, an orchestra in which he was principal cello from 2012-2014.

David received his Bachelor’s Degree and Performer Diploma at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music, where he studied with Eric Kim and the Pacifica Quartet. During spring break of 2017, David traveled to Vienna to participate in an exchange with students of the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien, where he received coaching from their chamber music faculty and performed alongside students from the university. During his time in Indiana David performed with many orchestras throughout the midwest including the Quad City Symphony Orchestra, the Paducah Symphony, and as principal cello of the Owensboro Symphony during their 2018-2019 season.

David was raised by two public school music educators, so teaching has always been an important part of his life. His home growing up was constantly filled with the sounds of his parents’ private students, so it was only natural that David began his own small teaching studio at the age of 15 and has held one ever since. In 2016, David served as assistant instructor to Susan Moses at the Indiana University Summer String Academy. During his fellowship at the Aspen Music Festival in 2018, he served as a mentor in the festival’s community music school, the P.A.L.S. program.

David participated in the Kent/Blossom Music Festival in 2015 and 2017 and was a fellow of the Aspen Music Festival in 2018. He performed with the New World Symphony in Miami, Florida during the 2018-2019 season, and has participated in solo and chamber masterclasses with Johannes Moser, Joshua Bell, Martin Beaver, Inbal Segev, Ani Kavafian, Brinton Smith, Joella Jones, and Jennifer Koh.
