San Francisco Conservatory of Music
Bachelor of Music: Violin Performance
Daniel Johnson
Violin, Viola, Piano

Daniel’s musical journey began as a highly creative and energetic seven year old, when his grandmother taught him how to play the piano. Daniel continued piano studies in Lagos, Nigeria, for five years until moving to the United States in 2004. His last piano instructor, Theresa Vipond, solidified his theory and musicianship at a young age. Daniel then took on the violin at age twelve in order to join a middle school orchestra.

Daniel immediately fell in love with the sound and challenge of the violin, and within two years became Concertmaster of the Philharmonic Orchestra, performing improvisations on an electric violin. He was also invited at age fourteen to travel to Italy, where he performed Ysaÿe and Bach Sonatas and Concertos.

Daniel performed and placed into TMEA Region orchestras every year of middle school and high school, and later made Texas All-State Orchestra every year of high school. This was the first time that Daniel experienced performing with passionate and dedicated players - a turning point in his musical career when he realized that he must be a lifelong musician. He also played in the Houston Youth Symphony and the Virtuosi of Houston, in addition to his role as Concertmaster of his High School orchestra as a freshman.

Throughout middle school and high school, Daniel was very fortunate to study with Ann Victor and Carolyn Vandiver, from whom he received the best possible instruction and motivation to pursue his musical dreams. He was accepted into a prestigious music school, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, affiliated with the New England Conservatory in Boston, and matriculated there for his last two years of high school. Daniel became Concertmaster of the New England Conservatory Youth Symphony and graduated the following year after winning his first major competition.

After being accepted into the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with the highest academic merit scholarship, Daniel went on to win two other international competitions. He had the honor to perform as a soloist twice in Carnegie Hall during his undergraduate studies, and he also received a Professional Development Grant as a sophomore for his new music collaborations and music compositions. Daniel recently won his fourth international competition and earned the opportunity to perform as a soloist at the Centre for Fine Arts Brussels, Belgium, in December 2019.

Daniel graduated from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance, and currently teaches violin, viola, and piano lessons in Houston, Texas. He also works as an assistant conductor at Strake Jesuit College Preparatory School in addition to teaching and performing.

Daniel loves to inspire younger generations to express themselves through the vehicle of music. His primary goal is to help students reach their musical potential, not only technically, but in an individually conscious and healthy way through a solid foundation and body awareness. He pushes his students to get out of their comfort zone and connect with their emotions through their physical body and inner voice. Daniel aims to help students to see their unique strengths, and to achieve goals through strategizing and maintaining consistent healthy patterns and careful, honest practice.
